Fellows

The title of IFMA Fellow is the most prestigious distinction bestowed by the International Facility Management Association. It recognizes outstanding contributions and service to IFMA and the facility management profession.

The Fellows program is more than a recognition program. Fellows are expected to remain engaged as leaders, advisors and ambassadors for IFMA and the profession. The distinction recognizes a sustained body of achievement while also carrying an expectation of continued service and leadership.

Christine Tobin, IFMA Fellow and 1990-91 IFMA Chair, helped establish the program and has long reminded new Fellows:

“Remember that becoming a Fellow is the beginning of service. You are now an official Ambassador for both IFMA and our profession. What you have done to date was simply to prepare you for what is to
come.”

History

The IFMA Board of Directors established the IFMA Fellows Program on January 31, 1992.

The inaugural Class of IFMA Fellows included association and Foundation founders, early IFMA leaders, researchers who helped define the emerging facility management profession, authors, educators, industry leaders and other individuals whose work significantly advanced IFMA and FM. The Fellows named in subsequent years reflect the increasingly broad and global reach of the profession.

No more than 0.5 percent of IFMA's total membership may hold the active title of IFMA Fellow.

As of 2026, IFMA has recognized 146 IFMA Fellows.

In 2021, the IFMA Board of Directors established the honorary title of IFMA Fellow Emeritus. The designation recognizes Fellows who are deceased or who are no longer actively engaged in IFMA and/or the profession. Living Fellows Emeriti continue to be recognized as part of the Fellows legacy but are not included in the calculation of the 0.5 percent limit.

What Distinguishes an IFMA Fellow

IFMA Fellows represent a broad range of professional disciplines, career paths and contributions to facility management. They include facility executives and practitioners, educators, researchers, authors, consultants, innovators and leaders from across IFMA's global community.

There is no single path to becoming an IFMA Fellow.

The distinction recognizes a substantial, sustained and broad body of contribution rather than a particular office held, award received or isolated accomplishment. Candidates are expected to demonstrate meaningful achievement in multiple areas and sustained service at more than one level or area of IFMA.

Professional credibility is essential. So is the demonstrated capacity to continue serving as a respected representative of IFMA and the facility management profession.

Fellows are frequently called upon to contribute their experience as leaders, advisors, mentors, subject-matter experts and ambassadors. Collectively, they provide continuity between IFMA's history, its present leadership and the future of the profession.

Nominations

Candidates for IFMA Fellow must meet the eligibility requirement of a minimum of eight years of IFMA membership and service to IFMA and the profession.

Self-nominations are not permitted. A nominator must be an IFMA member in good standing and may submit only one nomination each year.

The nomination must demonstrate the nominee's qualifications through a well-documented record of professional accomplishment, IFMA service and contributions that have enriched the facility management profession. The complete nomination package includes the required nomination information, a one-page nominator letter and three one-page Letters of Testimony from individuals with first-hand knowledge of the nominee’s character, commitment, and contributions.

The nominator is responsible for presenting a complete, accurate and compelling record. The Jury of Fellows evaluates the nominee only on the information contained in the submitted nomination package. It does not seek supplemental information from outside sources.

Each year, an IFMA Fellows Nominating Committee, composed of three to five Fellows, helps identify potential candidates and may assist nominators in understanding the nomination process and requirements.

To begin a nomination, contact Fellows@IFMA.org. IFMA staff will verify the eligibility of the nominator and prospective nominee and provide the current nomination materials and instructions.

Selection

The title of IFMA Fellow is bestowed annually by the Jury of Fellows.

The Jury consists of:

  • the current IFMA Chair;
  • the IFMA President/CEO; and
  • three IFMA Fellows elected by active IFMA Fellows.

The Jury uses a standardized evaluation methodology to promote fairness and consistency. Each nomination is evaluated on the nominee's cumulative record of professional accomplishment, service to IFMA, contributions to the profession, leadership, credibility and capacity to serve as an ongoing ambassador for IFMA and facility management.

The Jury is not required to select a Fellow in any given year. The title is bestowed only when the Jury determines that a nominee demonstrates the level and breadth of contribution expected of an IFMA Fellow.

Examples of Contributions Demonstrated by IFMA Fellows

The contributions of individual Fellows vary considerably. No single accomplishment or category is sufficient by itself. Examples of the types of sustained contributions demonstrated across the body of Fellows include:

  • Significant leadership and service to IFMA's Board of Directors, the IFMA Foundation Board of Trustees, chapters, councils, communities, committees, task forces and other components.
  • Distinguished professional accomplishments that have advanced the practice, visibility or influence of facility management.
  • Contributions to IFMA credentials, professional-development programs or accredited facility management degree programs.
  • Development of strategic relationships between IFMA and other professional organizations around the world.
  • Authorship of facility management books, articles, technical publications or other significant professional content.
  • Effective use of business, trade or general media to increase understanding of facility management and the role of IFMA.
  • Creation of publications, platforms or other means of sharing facility management knowledge.
  • Development of facility management education, continuing-education programs or university-level instruction.
  • Service as an IFMA instructor or contributor to IFMA educational programs.
  • Significant facility management research that has advanced knowledge or professional practice.
  • Formation, development or sustained support of IFMA chapters, councils, communities and other components.
  • Leadership in other organizations serving facility management or the broader built environment.
  • Mentoring and development of students, emerging professionals and future FM leaders.
  • Engagement with government, business and community leaders to advance understanding of facility management and the importance of the built environment.
  • Development of innovations, products, services, methodologies or practices that have materially influenced the profession.

The Fellows Legacy

The influence of IFMA Fellows extends beyond the individuals who hold the title. Their collective work reflects much of the development of IFMA and the modern facility management profession.

As IFMA approaches its 50th anniversary in 2030, Fellows are also working to preserve that history by capturing the experiences and contributions of Fellows, Fellows Emeriti, founders and other leaders whose work helped shape the association and profession.

These stories help connect IFMA's past to the people who will lead facility management in the future.

2025 Class of IFMA Fellows

Laurie Gilmer, P.E., CFM, FMP, SFP, LEED AP, CDT, IFMA Fellow is one of IFMA’s most dedicated leaders, focused on uplifting others in their professional growth and experience. That dedication transcends borders, languages and workplace disciplines, bringing wisdom, warmth and broad facility management expertise to her many leadership roles. Leading IFMA’s Global Board of Directors as 2022-23 chair, Gilmer focused her energy on making and encouraging post-pandemic human connections, reigniting participation throughout the association, which resulted in record membership numbers.

A force for positive change, Gilmer’s influence is felt across IFMA’s industry-leading training and content offerings. She has served as a member of the International Credentials Committee, chair of the Sustainability Facility Professional Credential Scheme Committee, a member of the Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability Advisory Group, chair of IFMA’s Education Committee, and chair of IFMA’s Knowledge Strategy Committee.

Her grasp of FM and its emerging and critical issues is embedded in every speaking engagement, published work and class taught, as she shares her broad scope of knowledge and deep industry insights with IFMA, other professional associations, companies, colleges and universities.

Benjamin Goudy, MBA, CFM, IFMA Fellow is a dedicated driver of FM’s advancement as a source for organizational innovation and success. With almost 40 years of experience, Goudy has worked in diverse industries and cultures, with FM responsibilities for Fortune 50 technology and life sciences companies.

He created and implemented a scalable ISO-based facility service program for Meta, Google, AWS data centers; co-wrote Microsoft’s initial Facilities Sustainability Program, setting the company’s 2030 carbon reduction goals; received the Intel Environmental Excellence Award for leadership of global recycling by eliminating 33,000 tons from landfill; and received the 2012 ISS CEO Award for saving US$7 million in one year for HP facilities via detailed benchmarking by space.

Goudy’s contributions to IFMA span 30 years, serving in a number of leadership roles, including chair of IFMA’s Americas Advisory Board, for which he refined the board’s mission, charter, structure and membership, played a significant role in establishing two thriving IFMA chapters in Mexico City and Barbados, built relationships between regions for cross-utilization of best practice methods, and identified targeted growth areas in Canada, Central and South America.

Frank Ngoh, CFM, SFP, FMP, CFME Tier 1, IFMA Fellow is a proven ambassador and mentor for both the industry and IFMA, fostering growth and excellence in the FM profession, facilitating meaningful connections between IFMA and local governments, promoting collaborative opportunities with other associations and private institutions, and leading positive change in the built environment.

His global impact as a sustainability leader is best represented by the transformation of a brownfield site into Singapore’s first eco-town. He introduced Singapore's first vertical farm and black soldier fly farm, and set up an ecosystem of government agencies, utilities companies and educational institutes to allow easy access by residents, all of which are a model for true sustainable urban development and community engagement.

As chair of the Singapore International Facility Management Association Accreditation Board, he leads a team of industry leaders to assess the competency of companies in providing FM services. As president of IFMA’s Singapore Chapter, Ngoh has reached out to neighboring countries to lay the groundwork for future chapters and works tirelessly to elevate standards in the region by emphasizing IFMA credentials as pivotal to transforming the FM industry globally.
