Membership Categories

The facility management community is diverse. The IFMA community reflects and supports diversity across membership categories.

Whether you are a facility manager, study or teach facility management, provide facility-related solutions, contribute to or have an interest in best workplace practices, you will find a place in the IFMA community.

IFMA membership is annual. Membership is renewed on the anniversary of the date your application was approved. Your option to renew each year is indefinite. We ask that membership applicants support the purpose, vision, mission, goals, core values and Code of Ethics of the association. Membership is individually based and is non-transferable and non-refundable.

FM Professional Member

FM Professional, Transitioning to an FM Career, Job Seeker, Other Workplace Professional

Open to facility practitioners and educators whose primary responsibilities are to provide, oversee or teach one (or more) facility management competency. Please review the following competencies and examples:

  • Communication: Planning, delivery, evaluation.
  • Facility Information Management and Technology Management: Technology needs assessment and implementation, data collection and information management, maintenance and upgrade of technology systems, information protection and cyber-security.
  • Finance and Business: Operational and capital budgeting, evidence-based decision-making process, procurement, contracting, financial analysis, reporting.
  • Leadership & Strategy: Strategic planning and alignment with the demand organization; policies, procedures and compliance; individual and team management; leadership; relationship and conflict management; change management; corporate social responsibility; political, social, economic and industry factors affecting facility management.
  • Occupancy and Human Factors: Workplace environment, occupant services, occupant health, safety and security.
  • Operations & Maintenance: Buildings; building systems; infrastructure and grounds; furniture, fixtures and equipment; physical safety and security; operations and maintenance processes; work management support systems; renewals and renovations.
  • Performance and Quality: Performance management and quality management.
  • Project Management: Planning and design, execution and delivery, and evaluation.
  • Real Estate: Real estate strategies, assessment, acquisition and disposal; real estate asset management; space management; major projects and new construction.
  • Risk Management: Risk management planning; emergency preparedness, response and recovery; facility resilience and business continuity.
  • Sustainability: Energy management, water management, materials and consumables management, waste management, workplace and site management.

Associate Member

Company Representative or Solutions Provider

Open to individuals whose primary responsibilities include: business development; sales and/or marketing as a consultant; representation of a manufacturer, vendor, dealer or distributor; and/or provider of facility-related products and services.

Young Professional Member

Open to IFMA members who are 35 years of age or younger.

Student Member

Open to candidates who are engaged in full-time study at an accredited college or university. At such time as the member is no longer engaged in full-time study, he or she will be reclassified to the appropriate membership category.

Verification of full-time student status and expected graduation date is required.

Retired Member

Open to members in good standing upon their permanent retirement from full-time facility management practice, business development, sales and/or marketing. Should a retired member return to full-time employment as either a practitioner, in business development, or a sales and/or marketing position, he or she will be reclassified to the appropriate membership category.
