IFMA’s World Workplace 2017 thrives in post-Harvey Houston

Nov. 02, 2017

More than 4,000 facility management (FM) professionals attended the World Workplace Conference and Expo in Houston, Texas, USA on Oct. 18-20. The International Facility Management Association (IFMA), whose largest global Service Center of Excellence office is in Houston, presented its flagship event in collaboration with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The 2017 attendance levels far exceeded expectations after Hurricane Harvey devastated much of Houston just six weeks before the conference. FM professionals are often responsible for disaster recovery and business continuity plans for their facility portfolios. In fact, many of IFMA’s members were conducting disaster recovery from hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria as well as the earthquake in Mexico. Disaster preparation and recovery became a major theme of the conference.

While natural disasters were on the minds of many attendees, the conference covered much more. Exciting keynote addresses by visionary economist Jeremy Rifkin and NASA astronauts Captains Mark and Scott Kelly explored the conference theme, “We are FM: A Universe of Possibilities.” Participants attended networking events — such as a rodeo-inspired welcome reception hosted at LEED-certified urban park Discovery Green — and a wide variety of educational offerings covering all aspects of the dynamic FM industry. On the 300+-exhibitor expo floor, they explored innovative industry solutions and new built environment technologies.

World Workplace is the original all-encompassing learning and networking event on facilities and how to manage them. There’s program value for FM professionals at every point of their careers and across all types of facilities. Although many have tried to imitate its success, World Workplace remains the gold standard for discovering new ideas and technology impacting the FM industry. IFMA will hold its World Workplace Conference and Expo next year in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA on Oct. 3-5, 2018. IFMA also collaborates with RICS to host World Workplace conferences in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
