IFMA is a recognized leader in office related facility
management benchmarking. The Association started collecting
benchmarking information in the 1980’s and has
published several reports. In 2001, IFMA published Operations
and Maintenance Benchmarks, Research Report #21,the
first benchmarking report focused specifically on a
facility management core competency. Project Management
Benchmarks follows this successful effort in that it,
too, concentrates on a FM core competency. Participants
in previous benchmarking studies made numerous requests
for more benchmarking information related to space planning,
move management and project management. As a result,
IFMA’s research department decided to concentrate
this current benchmarking effort exclusively to these
areas.
With the assistance of IFMA’s research committee
and other subject matter experts, IFMA designed the
survey based upon questions posed in previous studies
and created new questions related to strategic facility
planning, space planning and project management. The
survey was mailed to IFMA professional members in the
U.S. and Canada in April 2002. Members opting for electronic
delivery of benefits received e-mails in April soliciting
their participation and directing them to the web site
where the survey was housed for more than five months.
More than 650 surveys were returned by the end of August
2002. A total of 629 surveys were used for analysis.
Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. Staff
reviewed all surveys prior to entering data and contacted
respondents for missing square footage and aberrant
data. Despite this extensive effort, IFMA and its research
committee cannot assume responsibility for errors from
research of this nature.

this report is available for inquiries from members
on a fee basis. The database also may be obtained in
its entirety in Microsoft® Excel for a fee. Please
see the back cover to determine pricing. Representatives
from organizations that participated in this study receive
a discount on benchmark database orders.
IFMA thanks all of the respondents who completed the
Project Management Benchmarks survey, making this report
a valuable tool for benchmarking.
