IFMA FOUNDATION TAKES RECOGNIZED DEGREE PROGRAMS TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS

The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Foundation may be coming to a college near you. With an eye on the future of the facility management industry, the IFMA Foundation will now oversee Recognized Degree Programs – facility management degree plans at IFMA-certified universities – and establish a director of academic programs to support them.

Developed in 1996 and formerly managed by IFMA, Recognized Degree Programs provide the most comprehensive facility management degrees available through adherence to a broad range of industry educational standards. Shifting the responsibility for the programs to the IFMA Foundation, best known for providing scholarships and conducting research, was a natural fit.

“Moving the Recognized Degree Programs into the IFMA Foundation will increase the number and quality of formal education programs in facility management and bring together the industry and students so that both benefit,” said Kathy Roper, CFM, CFMJ, MCR, LEED AP, chair of the Recognized Degree Program Committee and a professor at Georgia Tech. “I’m excited about this opportunity and hope that facility managers see the value in education for future managers within our organizations.”

As the facility management industry continues to grow and gain international recognition, there is an increased need for qualified facility managers. Recognized Degree Programs not only meet this need, but also elevate the status of the facility management industry within the academic community.

“Recognized Degree Programs enhance the viability of the profession,” said Charles Claar, PE, CFM, CFMJ and vice chair of the IFMA Foundation. “This move will keep recognized programs in the limelight not only in the profession, but also in academia.”

Students from Recognized Degree Programs will meet at IFMA’s World Workplace 2007 Conference & Expo, Oct. 24-26 in New Orleans, La., to compete in the E-poster Competition, where they will present their work in facility management. Authors of the winning E-poster will win a trip to the 2008 EuroFM Conference in Manchester, UK.
