If you submit your response by March 8, you could win a US$50 American Express gift card as a “thank you” for participating. Just include your contact information at the end of the survey, and you’ll be entered to win!

Online Community discussion: Manufacturing Council benchmarking plan
Every day, IFMA councils and communities of practice help each other with facility-specific issues through the online community. Here’s an excerpt from the Manufacturing Council’s benchmarking discussion:
Manufacturing Council's 2010 Benchmarking Plan
Gary Rudkin posted on Monday, January 11, 2010:
Manufacturing Council members are invited to participate in the development the 2010 benchmarking plan. Members will brainstorm various benchmarks such as financial performance measures, work process measures and project management performance measures.
Peter Bibbo replied on Tuesday, January 19, 2010:
A recurring theme I see in various IFMA forums is the desire for simple solutions. The benchmarks we design have to be easily measured by firms with minimal resources; a valuable tool would be a template that any member could use, even if they don’t have a more sophisticated data-gathering capability.
I think we should limit our benchmarking to the biggest spends, because that’s where management will look for actionable programs. For a manufacturing plant, my two cents are:
- Energy consumption/gsf
- Water consumption/gsf
- Total maintenance labor cost as a percentage of RAV
- Total cost of all maintenance materials as a percentage of wither RAV or plant book value
- Total cleaning cost/gsf
- Inventory value of all physical goods as a percentage of plant book value
Virtually all of the values in the above list run through any CFO’s office. Measurement efforts should be minimized, and the categories are broad enough that comparison arguments should be manageable.
Gary Rudkin replied on Friday, January 22, 2010:
I will incorporate your feedback into the plan—excellent responses! We may request energy consumption for a multitude of sources. This will be process and region specific. Replacement Asset Value (RAV), if attainable, will be the most consistent measure to normalize plant sizes. The gap between book and replacement values can skew the data. I appreciate your comment on inventory value. We hold a huge amount of inventory, and I would like to know the average to RAV or average to maintenance budget.
Want to be a part of the Manufacturing Council’s benchmarking plans? Contact Kari Stein at IFMA headquarters to find out how you can be a part of this exciting project.
