Airport Facilities Council honors award winners at World Workplace

Sustainable practices adopted by cities around the world
A small city in southern Sweden is certainly leaving a lasting impression—by not leaving a carbon footprint. The city of Vaxjo (pronounced VECK-shur) has taken sustainability to a new level. Since 1993, Vaxjo has cut carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent, attracting business leaders and scientists alike to visit this quiet European city.

A state-of-the-art heating and power plant is fueled by wood chips from local sawmills. The ashes are then placed back into the forest as nutrients. The facility not only produces electricity, but it also warms the water used to cool the plant. This water is then used throughout the city to heat both residential and commercial spaces.

Vaxjo isn’t the only European city making strides in sustainability. The mayor of London has called for a cut in 60 percent of carbon dioxide emissions by 2025. Since 2006, Barcelona has required solar panels to be installed in renovated and new buildings, which will supply 60 percent or more of the energy needed to heat water. Copenhagen houses an 800-mile network of piping that pumps heat through 97 percent of the city.

This international trend has reached many cities throughout the world. Read more about these city-wide green practices by visiting http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21304364.

Start earning your FMP at IFMA’s 2007 Fall Symposium…
Approximately 250 facility management professionals are heading to New Orleans this Saturday to attend IFMA’s annual Fall Symposium and benefit from a wide selection of IFMA’s facility management competency courses. The Real Estate and Planning and Project Management Competency Courses have completely sold out, and there are only a handful of spaces left in the other available classes.

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable skills and get ahead in your career! Whether you are pursuing the Facility Management Professional (FMP) designation or you just want to learn more about the nine competencies of facility management, IFMA’s Fall Symposium offers the right tools to get you started.

Facility managers with less than five years of experience as well as providers of FM products and services are encouraged to pursue the FMP credential as a means to acquire practical knowledge and professional recognition. Distinguish yourself from the competition by displaying your knowledge of facilities right on your business card! Add “FMP” after your name in just a few months by completing IFMA’s four-course FMP program.

If you have not started the FMP process, we recommend taking IFMA’s introduction to the nine FM core competencies, The Business of FM, Oct. 20-23. Only two spaces remain, so register today!

Fall Symposium is your last chance this year to take The Business of FM in an interactive classroom setting. Contact Leslie Scantlebury, education marketing coordinator, at leslie.scantlebury@ifma.org to reserve your space today.

Essential management skills for motivating your team to bring your projects in on time and on budget will also be addressed.

Learn how to manage people, places and processes to build the type of FM department that's right for your organization. Course attendees will learn about the facility manager’s role as a planner, organizer, leader, coordinator and evaluator.
