Just One Week Left to Reserve Your Space at IFMA’s Next Education Event Top
Don’t miss your opportunity to learn to speak the language of business and technology in less than a week. The deadline to secure your housing for IFMA’s September education event is Monday, Sept. 3.
Register today for the Technology Competency Course and the Finance Competency Course, Sept. 25-28 at IFMA Headquarters in Houston, Texas. Increase your awareness of a facility manager’s technological and financial issues while forming valuable business contacts with facility professionals taking the courses.
Technology Competency Course | Sept. 25-26
According to IFMA’s Facility Management Forecast 2007, managing the multiple systems that automate building operations and utilizing those systems to their fullest potential is a significant challenge facing facility managers today and in the coming years. Taking advantage of emerging technology, from Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM) programs to innovations in communications, can help facility management professionals streamline facility operations, better manage real estate assets and meet evolving employee requirements.
Register for IFMA’s Technology Competency Course and learn how FMs plan, evaluate, implement and manage technology to support core business processes, facility management operations, technical infrastructure and strategic business results.
Finance Competency Course | Sept. 27-28
Communicating the fiscal importance of facilities to executive management is critical to getting projects approved. Learning to speak the language of business can help FMs become players instead of observers in their organizations’ top-level decision-making processes.
From mastering basic financial management programs and accounting concepts to tackling cost control, forecasting and budgeting, IFMA’s Finance Competency Course will provide insight into how facility managers manage their budgets and how they can make an effective financial case for their FM organizations.
Each course costs $495 (U.S.) for IFMA members, a $200 savings off nonmember rates. Take both courses and your membership more than pays for itself! Register now for the Technology and Finance Competency Courses this September. And call the Renaissance Houston Hotel Greenway Plaza at (800) 468-3571 to secure your room by Monday, Sept. 3, to lock in the special IFMA rate of $129 per night!

Airport Facilities Council announces award program
The Airport Facilities Council of IFMA has developed an industry first—The Airport Facilities Council Award for Airport Facilities Management Excellence. No where else in the aviation and travel industry is there an award that recognizes the excellence displayed on a daily basis by the facility departments that operate and maintain the world’s airports.
Often working behind the scenes, airport facility personnel help to ensure the smooth operation of everyday activities such as baggage handling, airport renovation and traffic control.
This new program seeks to establish quality standards and provide the recognition for airport facilities teams. Award submissions will be evaluated using five criteria: leadership, innovation, sustainability, customer service and operational efficiency.
A panel of Airport Facilities Council judges will determine award winners in five categories based on the airport’s number of annual passengers. Winners will be announced at IFMA’s World Workplace 2007 Conference & Expo in New Orleans, La.
Nominate an airport facilities team by Thursday, Aug. 30. You do not have to be a member of the Airport Facilities Council to nominate or win the award.
For more information or to submit a nomination, visit the council’s Web site at www.ifma-airp.org or contact Melissa Hyde, senior council liaison, at melissa.hyde@ifma.org.

Health Care Council “greens” hospitals
Americans are becoming increasingly concerned with the well being of the planet and society. Environmental responsibility and health care are top priorities across the globe. Addressing these concerns is the first-of-its-kind Green Patient Room, a health care exhibit utilizing eco-friendly design and materials to show how “green” hospital facilities can go.
Created by architectural firm Anshen+Allen in conjunction with the Health Care Council of IFMA and Corporate Realty, Design & Construction, the Green Patient Room was unveiled earlier this year at D&D Communications Group’s Commercial Construction Show in Chicago, Ill. It was developed to illustrate how sustainable design practices can improve patient care by increasing efficiency and reducing the anxiety of medical staff, patients and families. The room also serves as an educational tool for health care administrators, showing how they can adopt green practices now.
The Green Patient Room is divided into three unique zones: patient, family and staff. Each zone is meant to improve patient care by increasing comfort and minimizing disorder and stress.
- The patient zone provides patients with as much control over their environment as possible. Medical equipment is discreetly located on one side of the patient bed, where it is easily accessible to medical staff, yet out of sight of patients and their families.
- The family zone is designed to encourage family stays. Reminiscent of a living room, the family zone features a sleeper sofa, television, desktop space and other amenities.
- The staff zone is organized to accommodate staff workflow and provide better access to equipment by reducing clutter and improving lighting, thereby helping minimize injury and medical error.
The Green Patient Room takes practical, cost-effective steps to combat energy waste and improve patient health with low-flow faucet aerators, showerheads and toilets to reduce water consumption, high-performance lighting, and glass and insulation systems that utilize natural light and reduce energy costs. Non-toxic materials are used throughout the room to improve air quality and speed patient recovery.
The Green Patient Room will be featured in Booth 241 at IFMA’s World Workplace 2007 Conference & Expo, Oct. 24-26, in New Orleans, La. Don’t miss it—register today!
The Health Care Council welcomes facility managers working for hospitals and other related organizations. Members learn about the latest innovations in the field, tour health care facilities and network with other facility professionals. Contact Jeannie Nguyen, council liaison, at jeannie.nguyen@ifma.org for details on council membership.
