IFMA’s World Workplace Conference and Expo has plenty to offer for early arrivers

Although IFMA’s flagship event, the World Workplace Conference and Expo, officially kicks off on Wednesday, facility professionals will have plenty to see, do and learn on Tuesday, Oct. 17. IFMA, in collaboration with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), has scheduled the conference for Oct. 18-20 in Houston, Texas, USA.

IFMA has declared “all systems go” for the event and related activities following careful consultation with city and conference center planners after Hurricane Harvey. Registration for World Workplace Conference and Expo is currently open at

Deeper Dive Sessions

This year’s event offers four Deeper Dive sessions, including the perennial favorite High Heels and Hard Hats. These in-depth, hands-on workshops run all day, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

  • Leading from the Middle – Influencing Without Authority

Facility Tours

Each year, IFMA offers widely popular FM-geared tours of facilities in and around the host city. This year’s tours run from 1-5 p.m., except for the field trip to the NASA Johnson Space Center Visitor’s Center, which runs 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Facility tour options include:

IFMA House of Delegates and Annual Meeting

See for yourself how members and volunteer leaders help shape the direction of IFMA. IFMA executive and board leadership will offer member-facing presentations, a question-and-answer opportunity and a peek behind the curtain of why IFMA remains the largest and most recognized association for FM professionals. The meeting is open to members from 2:30-4 p.m. in Room 310 of the Convention Center (third level).

Charitable Opportunities

Doug Underwood/Utilities Council of IFMA Golf Tournament 

The 2017 Doug Underwood/Utilities Council of IFMA Golf Tournament is raising funds to award US$10,000 in scholarships to students pursuing higher education in facility management. The event kicks off at 7 a.m. at the Tour 18 Golf Course in Humble, Texas. More information and registration information is here.

FM Academic Awards and Foundation Celebration Denim and Diamonds Fundraiser

Put on your blue jeans, belt buckles and bling and empty your pockets for the future of FM! The FM Academic Awards and Foundation Celebration Denim and Diamonds Fundraiser will be held this year from 7-10 p.m. at the Rice Hotel Crystal Ballroom, one of Houston’s most unique historic landmarks. The Crystal Ballroom is resplendent with crystal chandeliers, heroic murals, 35-foot ceilings and a full wraparound terrace. See the 2017 scholarship recipients presented with their awards, as well as new Accredited Degree Programs. Hurricane Recovery Volunteer Opportunit​y

Finally, for conference attendees who are interested in assisting with the hurricane recovery effort in Houston, IFMA is helping to rebuild and restore facilities for the Oak Dads’ Club on Tuesday from 1-5 p.m. Oaks Dads’ Club has been providing youth sports to the children of Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Candlelight, Timbergrove, Inwood Forest, Shepherd Park Plaza and the surrounding Houston areas since 1954. A state registered 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Corporation, the club is operated by volunteers who donate their time and efforts to help children learn the fundamental skills of sports while practicing good sportsmanship and developing confidence. ​More information here.

World Workplace is the original all-encompassing learning and networking event on facilities and how to manage them. There’s program value for FM professionals at every point of their careers and across all types of facilities. Although many have tried to imitate its success, World Workplace remains he gold standard for discovering new ideas and technology impacting the FM industry. Just as Houston has been a key staging point for humanity’s exploration of outer space, World Workplace in Houston will be the launching point for FM professionals into exciting new dimensions of discovery.
