The Communication Competency Course

You convey a certain image of yourself every time you express yourself-whether it's through the written or spoken word. The type of image you convey not only influences how people think of you, it also influences what they do for you, and in today's collaborative work environment you must work through others and with others to accomplish almost anything.

Learn how to make your first impression your best impression—powerful and positive. You have to know how to lead, inspire, coach and counsel people. This course will cover the entire range of communication, from interpersonal communication to the latest in communication technologies.


Learning Objectives

Part 1: Importance of Interpersonal Skills
Persons interested in becoming facility managers should have good communication skills and be able to establish effective working relationships with many different people, ranging from managers, supervisors, and professionals, to clerks and blue-collar workers. They should be analytical, detail-oriented, flexible, and decisive. Objectives include:

  • Examination of self image and pinpointing areas for development and improvement
  • Understanding of individual personality types and how to respond to them
  • Learn when and how to use the language of power and the language of communication
  • Improve interpersonal skills that include persuasive communication and listening

Part 2: Improving Interpersonal Skills
Developing and improving interpersonal skills will help you manage and lead effectively. Objectives include:

  • Understanding and adapting to difficult people
  • Learn communication skills needed to resolve conflict and bring about cooperation
  • Use powerful negotiating techniques to enhance you professional success
  • Achieve success through "social capital" by networking

Part 3: Meetings and Written Communication
Facility managers are continually called to provide directions, share written information and reports, conduct meetings and many more. Furthermore, they must be able to communicate with professionals from many disciplines. Objectives include:

  • Learn how to plan and conduct effective meetings
  • Identify different types of meetings, and learn how to be an effective meeting facilitator
  • Apply the principles of writing to business and personal correspondence
  • Describe the different types of employee correspondence
  • Apply the guidelines of memo writing to business memos
  • Prepare clear and effective meeting notices, agendas and minutes
  • Identify the components of proposals

Part 4: Presentations and Communication Technologies
Facility managers sell ideas and proposals. They must be persuasive to effectively do the job. The current work environment dictates that you not only have to be good at what you do, but you also need to be able to promote what you do well and use the most up to date technologies available. Objectives include:

  • Identify the purpose, audience, logistics, and steps involved in the development of a presentation
  • Develop and deliver different types of presentations
  • Present information visually
  • Identify the various ways technology can be used to enhance communications
