IFMA’s 2011 Public Policy Document:
Building Futures.

This document will provide an overview of IFMA, our priorities in this Congress and how they are linked to the current climate in Washington.

CNN article that provides a good overview of the Congress’s priorities for the rest of the year. Congress will be focused on jobs and reducing government spending, two things that are often not found together. Congress will need to work hard to spur job growth without a new stimulus plan. Everyone in Washington will be working over the next few months to protect programs important to their states and industries.

Report produced by the High Performance Congressional Caucus, where IFMA sits on the steering committee, which provides a number of recommendations to Congress to achieve true high performance buildings.

Advocacy Day & Public Policy

Make your voice heard in Washington, D.C., on behalf of FM

Sept. 20-21, 2011
Embassy Suites Crystal City - National Airport | Arlington, Va.

It is regularly said in Washington, D.C., that if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu. Decisions made in the U.S. Capitol increasingly impact facilities and those who manage and support them. You must be a part of the conversation to ensure that those decisions are made with your best interests in mind.

IFMA continually monitors developments in Washington, D.C.; but in order to further magnify the importance of the FM professional, we need to engage our most effective resource—the experience and expertise of IFMA’s membership.

This annual meeting has become an important forum for agency, congressional and industry leaders to exchange ideas and best practices regarding the future of our nation’s built environment and the integrated demands on our infrastructure.

Following last year’s Advocacy Day, those who participated were notified that the Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act of 2010 had passed through the house, and the senate was headed to President Obama’s desk. IFMA chapter leaders played an important role in educating Congress and their staff about the bill’s importance.

IFMA also is working to advance President Obama’s Better Buildings Initiative.

Goals include:

  • Achieve a 20% improvement in the energy efficiency of commercial buildings by 2020.
  • Reduce companies’ and business owners’ energy bills by about US$40 billion per year.
  • Save energy by reforming outdated incentives and challenging the private sector to act.

You need not have any prior advocacy experience in order to participate. All you need is a passion for FM and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and ask, “What can I do to help the profession?” IFMA will provide an overview of the association’s government relations program on the afternoon of Sept. 20, covering what to expect in a meeting with a member of Congress and how to articulate IFMA’s positions on certain issues.
